There are many points to consider, including data formats aging and becoming obsolete, and, as such, unreadable and almost unrecoverable, media aging, so that data recorded on a brand-new discs today would be impossible to read in the future, as there will be no players for these discs, and many others.
Since it is impossible to preserve everything, there should be a simpler solution. Electronic-discovery tools typically convert documents to a common data format for viewing but carry with them important metadata, such as when and where they're created. Documents can be searched using keywords, then categorized into subsets. For example, a legal team providing documents to the opposing side could hold back all documents marked confidential and irrelevant.

It was necessary to first obtain a clear understanding of the existing systems in order to formulate the correct requirements.
